Preparing for a family photoshoot

A little prep can make a family photoshoot go from good to absolutely stunning! Here are some key tips to ensure things go smoothly:

1. Coordinate Outfits, Don’t Match

  • Color Palette: Choose colors that complement each other rather than matching everyone identically. Soft, neutral tones or seasonal colors work well.
  • Patterns & Textures: A mix of solids with small patterns can add depth. Avoid heavy graphics or logos; they can be distracting.

2. Plan Around the Kids’ Schedules

  • Try to book the shoot for when kids are typically well-rested and fed. This will help avoid crankiness and keep them engaged.
  • For younger kids, pack snacks, toys, or blankets they’re comfortable with – little things can make a big difference if they start feeling restless.

3. Bring a Few Props

  • Props like a blanket, a favorite stuffed animal, or something seasonal (like flowers or pumpkins) can add a personal touch and make for natural interaction shots.
  • Avoid bringing too many props, though; a few thoughtful items are best.

4. Set Expectations, But Keep It Fun

  • Remind everyone (especially kids) that it’s more about capturing moments than posing perfectly.
  • Encourage natural moments and expressions – if everyone is relaxed, it’ll come through beautifully in the photos.

5. Prepare Yourselves for the Outdoors

  • If it’s an outdoor shoot, bring layers to keep warm or sunscreen if it’s sunny.
  • Comfortable shoes (that can be slipped on and off) are great, especially if you’re shooting in different locations or settings.

6. Trust Your Photographer

  • Let them guide you on lighting, poses, and positioning. Their experience in seeing what works best with families and various light conditions will lead to amazing results.

This prep will let everyone feel at ease and enjoy the experience, resulting in photos that are filled with real connection and joy.
